New York Times: Show of Floral Works, Some Inspired by Poetry
By D. DOMINICK LOMBARDI , Published: July 2, 2000 FLORAL painting has long been
one of the staples of representational art. Because of its decorative quality, many see this
form as craft; some artists, however, have managed to add something extra to this oft-too-familiar
genre. Examples of both kinds of botanical works can be viewed at the current exhibition at the
Chappaqua Library Gallery here, titled ''From the Garden.'' Susan Parslow uses the old technique
of painting light oils or watercolors on a black-and-white print. ''Hydrangea'' (1999) (right)
delivers an otherworldly effect, as the artist combines the tinted purple and yellow flowers with
the background of uncolored, curly top hydrangea.
New York Times: Turning a Lens on Salvation and Sin
Published: September 24, 2000 THE images might be considered unearthly and, indeed, that is
the theme of the exhibit: ''Heaven and Hell: Images of Sin and Salvation.'' But the photographs on
display at Art on Main Street/Yonkers are very much a part of the world. In the arts center's second annual photography exhibit, 20
Westchester phographers share their visions of the sacred and transcendental as well as scenes of suffering and discord. Correction:
October 8, 2000, Sunday A picture caption on Sept. 24 about an exhibition at Art on Main Street/ Yonkers included an erroneous credit
from the gallery for a photograph of a gated entranceway., mistakenly attributed to another photographer, later corrected in the TImes.
The photographer was Susan Parslow, not Arnold Kastenbaum.
Publishers of Work by Susan Parslow:
• Bruce McGaw Graphics, Nyack, New York (Museum Quality & Fine Art Posters)
• Blossoms & Bows, Cambridgeshire, England (Floral Greeting Cards)
